The beloved return to form for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise, THPS 1+2 is making its way to Nintendo Switch. The latest instalment in the franchise is in high praise for its astounding gameplay while retaining nostalgic value. Not two days later, THPS 1+2 got announced for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch. Radicle!!! (Is that how we connect with the cool kids these days?)

1. Get into Quick Sessions without Committing!

Tony Hawk Pro Skater is well known for being an arcade-y, fun, pick-up-and-play franchise. It doesn’t mesh all of it’s levels into a huge open world to explore, but instead segregates them into separate, sizeable chunks that you access from the main menu. You might think that that’s a step back from modern gaming, but when you peep at THPS intricate level design that is heavy on interactable props and extreme verticality, you’ll realize that “open world” doesn’t make or break a game.

In multiplayer mode, you can set a variety of settings (or go with the defaults) to hop into a session with your friends. Play a game of S-K-A-T-E (which is basically a skating version of HORSE), outshine each other in “Trick Attack”, or just horse around in the vibrant and beautiful skate domains.

Aside from doing awesome tricks, you can also explore the secrets of each level and even bump into each other just to mess up that 2 million point combo. Whatever the case, just pick it up and play!

2. Joy-Con Multiplayer

Something that sets off a lot of people is having to buy an extra controller for their console. With the prices of controllers dramatically increasing, not everyone can afford the luxury of an additional controller. That said, Nintendo’s innovative take on the gaming peripheral should make playing multiplayer on Tony Hawk hassle-free.

3. Exhilarating Gameplay

In THPS Remaster, you get the adrenaline-fueled thrill of skating from the safety of your couch. The gameplay and controls are nowhere near realistic to an actual professional skater’s performance, but the game does well to capture the thrill and essence of being one.

Catch big air from the verts, do almost every flip in existence, grind on almost any artifact with an edge, and combo everything with manuals and reverts. THPS does well to blow up the fantastical ridiculousness of skating, while keeping it just grounded enough to digest.

4. Value for Money

THPS 1+2 Remaster is just that, both Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 (1999) and Pro Skater 2 (2000) bundled into one banging package, remade and remastered for modern hardware. Get access to all the maps from both games as well as most of the content that provided such an amazing time 20 years ago! Some things, such as the a portion of the soundtrack and some skaters, could not be brought forward due to expired licenses, however there are new ones in its place!

With over 800 challenges to complete and more than a dozen maps to venture, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Remaster provides potential hundreds of hours of gameplay content. THPS 1+2 doesn’t skimp on the content, so you shouldn’t skimp on the money! (Even though you can, because SEAGM is having a Mario day Nintendo sale ’til March 15th. Last time I mention this I promise…)

5. Decent Learning Curve

THPS is a fun party game, but unlike certain games where luck plays a large factor, there are loads of game mechanics to master in order to become THE pro skater.

Despite being the most similar to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 in terms of gameplay, there’s a number of noticeable changes right off the bat. For one, it feels extremely “balanced”. While in THPS 4 you could string together grinds and plants effortlessly, THPS 1+2 disables the instantaneous transitions outright. You’ll need to practice connecting flips, grabs and the works with manuals and grinds.

THPS can be a mindless game where you just roam the streets and dip into the bowls on your board, but it’s more akin to a fighting game for skateboards. There’s even online multiplayer modes for those that truly want to assert their dominance as the one, true pro skater.

6. Great Party Game to Show Off

What’s a party game if you aren’t wooing the crowd? Not only is Pro Skater a fun game to play, but it’s also fun to watch. In addition to the variety of flips, grabs, and stalls, there are also signature tricks that have dramatic effects to them when pulled off. They aren’t easy to execute either (try imagining a Hadouken or DP input from Street Fighter), so everyone who has touched the game will be in awe of your expertise.

Also making people trip is always funny.

7. There’s Plenty of Unlockables for the Completionist

You can find hidden tapes of dope skate VODs, stat bonuses for your custom character, discover cheats, unlock decks, and more! Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 didn’t have any microtransactions when it first released and will continue to not have them with its Switch release. Just turn on the game, have fun, and unlock stuff along the way. If the music, gameplay, and sheer franchise of the game didn’t scream “nostalgia” enough for you, then this premise should.
