Monster Hunter Rise and Wings of Ruin are Coming to the Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s latest mini direct announced two new Monster Hunter games for the Nintendo Switch. Monster Hunter Rise is akin to the traditional MonHun games, introducing fresh mechanics and new monsters to slay. The second game is Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, a spin-off of the MonHun franchise. Both games received trailers during August 17th’s Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase, and both are slated to release in 2021.
Monster Hunter Rise – Taking Hunters to New Heights
The Monster Hunter franchise took a massive leap in graphical fidelity with Monster Hunter: World on PlayStation 4 and Steam. That same graphical prowess, while not perfectly achieved, is now being brought over to the Nintendo Switch. MH Rise presents graphics that are leaps and bounds ahead of the previous MonHun Switch game, Generations Ultimate. Character models look much more detailed and articulated, and combat animations look far more fluid while still retaining the iconic, clunky feel.
Aside from the updated graphics, there are also new gameplay mechanics to enhance the experience. One of the new mechanics is the “Wirebug”, which is akin to a grappling hook. It allows for high-speed traversals and will also allow players to explore flashy new combos. Aside from that, there is also the introduction of “Palamute”, which serves as a mount. By riding your Palamute, you can traverse the gorgeous maps of Rise at high speeds without consuming stamina. You can even run up vines to reach higher levels! Rest assured, Palicos are also making an appearance!
Environments are also undergoing a revamp. Rise carries forward the huge hunting areas that MonHun is known for while also redesigning certain elements so that players can fully utilize the new gameplay mechanics Rise introduces to the franchise.
The overall feel of Rise is much more fluid in comparison to its predecessors. Sprinting animations give off a more “urgent” impression and the new mechanics have the Hunter zipping across the map in Ninja-like fashion. It certainly leaves the impression of a faster, more exciting MonHun game. Monster Hunter Rise arrives to Nintendo Switch March 26, 2021. The game supports four-player online and local co-op.
MonHun RPGs – Wings of Ruin
Compared to Rise, not much is known about Wings of Ruin. The 2-minute-long trailer teases a suspenseful story between Man and Monster, and how they must quell a powerful force from ending the world.
Monster Hunter Stories are not typical MonHun games. They are RPG games, and have your characters fight alongside monsters. Nintendo’s website reads:
“Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin offers both RPG and Monster Hunter fans a unique new experience with a rich storyline featuring charming characters, challenging quests and friendly encounters with familiar monsters from the Monster Hunter series. Assuming the role of a young Monster Rider who can use a Kinship Stone to form strong bonds with monsters, players can gain experience and improve their skills to form deeper connections with these wonderful creatures. When ready, players can embark on memorable adventures filled with dramatic events and heartwarming friendships as the epic tale unfolds.”
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin releases sometime Summer 2021.
