Only two weeks left before the official release of Monster Hunter World PC version!. Some of us have been waiting for this game to come out on the PC since the official release in January. So despite it not being a ‘new’ game technically, it is still a big deal.

Do you need a monster PC to run MHW?

See what I did there? I’m sorry.
Recently, on the PCGaming subreddit, an article was shared titled “NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 unable to run Monster Hunter World with 60 FPS on highest settings at 1440p.” This was based on a post on ResetEra by a username FluffyQuack’. Of course, this spiked massive alarm from the general community. Raise the pitchforks and light the torches!
The outrage was mostly due to people having waited over half a year to get the game, those of us who don’t own a console could finally experience the hype. However, not everyone can own a PC an Intel i7-4790K, Nvidia GTX 1080, 16GB RAM computer.

The minimum requirements listed by Capcom were:

OS: Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (64 bit required)
Processor: Intel Core i5-4460, 3.20GHz, or AMD FX-6300 above
Memory: 8GB RAM
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 760, or AMD Radeon R7 260x (2GB VRAM and above)
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 20GB available space
Soundcard: DirectSound compatible ( DirectX 9.0c or higher)
Additional notes: Mouse, keyboard, and gamepads (both DirectInput and XInput) are supported. 30FPS at 1080p on LOW graphics settings.

But it was RECOMMENDED that you have:

OS: Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (64-bit required)
Processor: Intel Core i7 3770 3.4GHz or Intel Core i3 8350 4GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
Memory: 8GB RAM
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (3GB VRAM), or AMD Radeon RX 570X (4GB VRAM)
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 20GB available space
Soundcard: DirectSound compatible ( DirectX 9.0c or higher)
Additional notes: Mouse, keyboard, and gamepads (both DirectInput and XInput) are supported. 30FPS at 1080p on HIGH graphics settings.

So basically in order to actually be able to RUN the game, your PC needs to be no more than 4 years old. Or at least, your important parts need to be. When it comes to graphics, everyone looks at the graphics card. Now, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 is no slouch of a graphics cards and the fact that it was unable to run MHW on max settings really upsetted some people. However, despite the claim, there was no actual gameplay footage shown to back that up.
Although there’s still a bit of time (2 weeks, but who’s counting?) before the official PC launch of the game, Monster Hunter partners such as Arekkz Gaming and gaijinhunter have already gotten their hands on the copy. And they’ve released gameplay footage of MHW at maximum settings and minimum settings on their channels respectively. And I can’t say I find either one of those footages repulsive. The only difference between the highest and lowest settings was the textures on the monsters.

Maximum settings:

Minimum settings:

Of course, everyone’s PC is going to be slightly different so the footage you see from these streamers may not be what you’ll be getting exactly on your screen. However, the fact that the gameplay looks as good as it does, even on the lowest settings shows that graphics are not everything.

Updating Statement By FluffyQuack:

Now before you start getting angry again, note that the user has since updated their statement regarding their post:

“Those framerates I listed aren’t supposed to be seen as average framerates. They were included to highlight the scalability when changing between graphics settings. I quickly noted the framerate with the camera still in the starting hub, and the default position just so happens to be looking at one of the more complex scenes in the hub.
I feel a bit bad as people are taking it as a serious performance test, when my post isn’t supposed to represent that at all. I’ve edited my original forum post with the numbers, so if you could edit your quote of my post to reflect that, then that would be appreciated.”

And there you have it. Your panicking was all for naught.

There is no need for you to buy a new PC just to play MHW.

As long as you meet the minimum spec requirements, you should be able to run the game. You may have to play around with your settings to optimize the game for your PC. And if you have a 1080Ti and you’re looking to play the game on max settings, note that Nvidia does update their drivers when a major game title is released to optimize.
Note: Also, you’ll all be happy to know that PC players get better loading times. Be grateful.
