It’s been 24 years since the original release of the arcade classic Metal Slug. Fast forward to 2020, and we now have a brand new Metal Slug game coming to your mobile devices, and it’s called… uh… well, Metal Slug: Code J for now. (It’s a placeholder name).
Metal Slug Series
This popular series of run and gun games set the benchmark for 2D graphical gaming back in 1996, when it was released for SNK’s Neo Geo console. It’s well known for its comedical approach to a “war” based theme (Alien ships, and Martians included). The series revolves around four quintessential characters:

Metal Slug: Code J
The latest installment to the series has not received it’s actual name yet, but it does have a placeholder; Metal Slug: Code J. The game is being developed by TiMi Studios, and published by Tencent and SNK Playmore. Graphically, it looks like the game is implementing a more 3D touch to it, as opposed to the already familiar 2D graphics. Moreover from the trailer above, it looks fantastic!
Release Date
Tencent has been on a roll recently, with a teased Pokemon Unite last week, and now this. While there are no actual “confirmed” dates yet, what is known so far is that Metal Slug: Code J will be released this year. Will this be Metal Slug 2020? We’ll have to wait and find out.
