Blizzard’s CEO, Mike Morhaime, announced at BlizzCon 2017 that Blizzard is making StarCraft 2 free to play. StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty launched seven years ago and Blizzard wants to open it up to a broader audience this week. Tim Morten, production director, mentioned that the talks of the game going free to play have been going on for some time. However, they had to make sure to find the balance between new and existing players before implementing the change.
There was also a push from Blizzard’s e-sports partners. They wanted to see more new blood in the StarCraft 2 pro scene. By making the game free-to-play, it will hopefully become more accessible thus encouraging more competitors.
Morten made sure to remind players that there won’t be additional micro-transactions or secondary currencies. They are essentially taking an existing content that used to cost money and making it available for free.

What is included in StarCraft 2 free to play?

New players will get free access to Wings of Liberty campaign. But, if you already own Wings of Liberty, you’ll get free access to Heart of the Swarm instead. The cooperative mode and competitive multiplayer are accessible too. Players who get StarCraft 2 for free will have their co-op commander capped at level 5. Kerrigan, Raynor and Artanis will remain free indefinitely. To join ranked multiplayer matches, they will have to achieve 10 First Wins of the Day.
The rest of the campaigns will remain available for individual purchase. Once you’ve finished Wings of Liberty and you enjoy the game, you can get your hands on Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void and Nova Covert Ops. These will cost you $ 14.99 each.
StarCraft 2 launched in 2010 and easily became the fastest selling RTS ever, shipping more than three million copies. Get your own copy on November 14 via the launcher!
