The PSN Online ID Change

It’s happening. After 12 years of wait, PlayStation Network (PSN) Users will finally be given the chance to change their online IDs. The feature will be free the first time you use it, because God knows how many people have made grave mistakes. You can even choose to display your old ID along with your new one to let your older friends recognize you. Users can make a second and additional changes at a cost should they decide to abuse the feature. Here’s a list of prices for the PSN online ID change.

  • EU – €9.99/£7.99 or €4.99/£3.99 with Plus
  • NA – $9.99 USD / CAD or $4.99 USD/ CAD with Plus
  • JP – 1,000円* (JPY)  or 500円* (JPY) with Plus

*tax included
South East Asia has not announced a pricing yet. Ranges of the above prices convert to around 37-49 ringgit. Interested in purchasing PS Plus or other game console cards? Check out SEA Gamer Mall.
A step-by-step instruction manual has yet to be revealed, but Sony has stated that the feature will be accessible from the settings menu and profile page.

When is it happening?

PlayStation is launching the preview program where select users can test out the features at the end of November 2018. It will only be open to those who are have registered as testers for previous PS4 system software betas. According to my understanding, changing your ID on PS4 should also change it on PS3 and PS Vita. On the other hand, should you have a PSN Japan account, you can try to apply here.

PSN Japan is currently accepting applicants for beta testing

For the rest of us, we will have to wait until ‘early 2019’.

Cautions and Word of Warnings

This current feature is currently optimized for games published since April 1, 2018. Though Sony has confirmed that the new feature will be widely compatible with older games, problems could still occur. For that reason, you can revert to your original online ID to ‘fix’ these problems. You will, however, only get to revert once during the preview period.
As previously speculated in our rumor article, online multiplayer games will take full advantage of this feature.
This feature was only just recently announced, so several official Sony websites have yet to update their information.
