Esports Is Now a Medaled Event for the 2022 Asian Games

Videogaming was once shunned upon for being an unproductive time waster. As we progress forward, however, more and more people are seeing the potential the esports scene holds. From events held in garages that brought communities together, to huge arenas sponsored by massive corporations, the significance of esports has come a long way since its inception. Now, esports is officially a medaled event for the 2022 Asian Games that will be held in Hangzhou, China. The two week event will happen September 10 – 25, 2022.

The proposal met approval on December 16 during the 39th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The video conference comprised of His Excellency Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, President of the OCA. Also present were the Hangzhou organizing committee, and presidents of other participating regions.

Esports, alongside Breakdancing are new sports for the 2022 Asian Games. Esports is under the “Intellectual Project” category, while Breakdancing is under “Sports Dance”.
