Athlon Games, the owner of Digital Extremes and Splash Damage, just signed a deal with Middle-earth Enterprises to bring players a new game. What we know is – the events in the game will take place long before those in the timeline of Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit. Seeing as that’s the case, this ultimately means they will creative freedom to create new places and creatures without interrupting with anything canonical.
Middle-earth Enterprises, previously known as Tolkien Enterprises, is a division of The Saul Zaentz Company. They basically control everything that has anything to do with Lord of the Rings and The Hobbits. Hence why Athlon Games needed to cement this deal with the company before they can start working on the game. Nevertheless, Athlon Games will be working with an unnamed developer to be working on the game.

New Lord of the Rings game?

So what do we know so far about the new game? Athlon decided to partner up with Digital Extremes and they’re well known for Warframe, a free-to-play action game that is recognized for being one of the best F2P games in the market. Linking both together, we can safely assume it is going to be a LotR game that uses a F2P business model. We can still be wrong because nothing has been decided for the game. So far we do not know who the other developer is just yet.
Apart from that, there’s not much we can say other than it’s going to come out on consoles and PC. Athlon Games itself is actually pretty new. It was just established in Los Angeles and opened by Leyou Technologies. The company is headed by Dave Miller, an industry veteran that has worked with many other prominent companies like Warner Bros. Interactive, Codemasters, THQ and NBC Universal.
