New Footage, New Concepts

Every year, people squabble over which event is better, E3 or Tokyo Games Show (TGS)? I personally don’t care, but for Death Stranding, TGS is definitely its better half, or rather, ninth. The game received a-minute-and-a-half long trailer, introducing veteran voice actor Troy Baker as the presumed antagonist.  Following a cocky remark towards Norman Reedus’ character, Sam, the man in the Golden Mask summons a giant beast. He then vanishes from the scene, coaxing the protagonist to ‘not get eaten’.

The said beast is seen to be made of the same beings that ‘eats’ the main character in the E3 trailer, showing that they can be manipulated to Golden Mask’s will. The summoned being also bears a Golden Mask, further implying that it is under the control of the antagonist. What’s more interesting is that the shadowy beings, instead of preying on Golden Mask man, feed his mask power. In a wider shot of the man, you can see that he also carries a baby canister, though drowned in red fluid instead of yellow. He also has a navigation/detection device, but with three prongs instead of five. See the trailer for yourself here.

The More I see the Less I know

Truly, that is the most suitable phrase to describe the current state of Death Stranding, and I mean that in a good way. With all the crazy going on what with Guillermo del Toro and Mads Mikkelsen, you just may have forgotten that Golden Mask has appeared before. Here are some screenshots from TGA 2017 to jog your memory. In this trailer, it appears as the masked man is one of Sam’s delivery packages.

Is he the same person as in the latest trailer?

My head aches from all the strands I need to intertwine to make sense of all this, so I’ll leave this here for you to decipher. Leave some thoughts in the comments below!
