Astro’s eGG Network and co-organisers PGL and Imba TV officially launched The Kuala Lumpur Major yesterday. Held at The Rogue Club, YB Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s Minister of Youth and Sports attended and officiated the event. Besides him, pro players such as Chai ‘Mushi’ Yee Fung and Yap ‘xNova’ Jian Wei were there as well, raising the prestige bar.
The Kuala Lumpur Major is supported by the National Sports Council of Malaysia featuring a total prize pool of US$1 million. It will be held at Axiata Arena from 16 to 18 November. Tickets go on sales today so don’t miss out getting them if you’re a Dota 2 fan.

Why in Malaysia?

During the press conference, YB Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman pointed out that Malaysia is growing rapidly in the e-sports scene. In South East Asia, the county is among the ‘Big 6’ esports nation. Currently, this region has over 98% of esports enthusiasts. Subsequently, the number is expected to double to 19.8mn in 2019. This is in comparison to the 9.5mn back in 2016. Malaysia definitely has the potential to grow in the esports scene hence the reason why he supports it. The minister wishes to accelerate the growth of esports by holding an international tournament such as The Kuala Lumpur Major. With the 2022 Asian games considering esports as a competitive sport, it’s crucial that Malaysia goes in strong.
That aside, several other notable figures such as Lee Choong Khay (Astro’s Chief of Sports), Silvie Stroie (PGL Esports CEO) and Weirong Shen (Imba TV CEO) also shares the same sentiment. They are excited to bring the first-ever Major Dota 2 tournament to our shore.
