Surprise! PlayStation crossplay with Switch and XBox is Happening

In a PlayStation blog post, executive Vice President John Kodera stated that cross platform will be coming to PS4 starting today. Yes, that’s right. PlayStation crossplay is now a thing. The feature will be in beta-testing in the popular free-to-play game Fortnite: Battle Royale. Sony has decided to pursue the cross-play/cross-platform ideology after a “comprehensive evaluation process”.

It’s about Time

Sony has initially thrown off the idea of cross-platform play, insisting that “PlayStation is the best place to play”. The persistence by Sony however, garnered criticism and negative reception from gamers and studios alike. Obviously, it’s undeniable that Sony’s decision to allow cross-play was influenced by the vocal backlash.


Sony is still very persistent on convincing the world that it is still in fact, “the best place to play”. In the blog post, Mr. Kodera made this very clear by writing “We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.”
Despite so, Xbox seems to be very supportive of this decision, at least on Twitter. It has also gained the attention of popular YouTube star Ali-A and professional E-sports athlete FaZe Attach

Future possibilities with PlayStation Crossplay

Now that we know that PlayStation crossplay is most definitely a thing, we can expect more games to receive a cross-platform update. Publishers like EA have previously mentioned their interest in crossplay for their powerhouse franchises like FIFA and Battlefield. Can you imagine that? Finally, console wars can be put to rest. The debate of which system is better can finally be more than “all bark, no bite”, just by teaming up with your system mates and dishing it out cross-platform!
