Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, is Insomniac’s first ever game released for PS5. After spending eight hours on the title, not only did we find it to be an amazing game with gorgeous cinematic visuals, engaging combat mechanics, and the cutest cast of characters, but we’ve also understood just how important the PlayStation 5 is in terms of providing an amazing, exclusive gameplay experience to the future generation. Of course, we fully recommend it, and you can get it with cheap PlayStation Wallet gift cards from SEAGM.

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart Breaking New Grounds on PS5

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart fully incorporates the PS5’s latest hardware functionalities into its gameplay. It effectively uses the DualSense’s new functionality and the PS5’s blazing fast SSD. These are hardware features that cannot be replicated on any other device. No matter how fast a CPU’s clock speed, or a GPU’s raw power, if it’s not a PS5, gamers simply will not be able to experience it.

How Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart Takes Advantage of the PS5’s DualSense

At first glance the DualSense is just a more ergonomic and somewhat futuristic take on the previous DualShock 4. However, it is actually so much more. Thanks to three new features in the DualSense: a built-in mic, Haptic Feedback, and Adaptive triggers, the limits of immersive gaming experiences has forever changed. On paper, Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback may not be something to marvel at, as they are seemingly just improvements to functionality that is already there, but let’s tear down that assumption right now.

In Rift Apart, Adaptive Triggers play a crucial role in gunplay. In normal games, you may have needed to charge up a gun attack, like a Laser, by aiming down your sights on enemies with L2, or even holding down R2. If say you wanted to cancel the shot, you’d probably need to do something like weapon-switch mid charge or jump cancel. In some cases, you wouldn’t be able to cancel at all. Now this isn’t necessarily terrible, as this imposed limit can lead to interesting gameplay mechanics, like in the case of Devil May Cry, but let’s put that debate aside for a second.

Other Weapons

In Ratchet and Clank, Adaptive Triggers allow you to execute charging mechanics by simply half-pressing R2. With being able to do so much with just one button, there is now limitless possibility when it comes to adding game mechanics. It frees up the functionality of the L2 button, and other buttons. On paper, this means that the buttons are now free to have other actions binded to them, expanding the possible gameplay mechanics that can be implemented to the game.

Another gun from Rift Apart that fully showcases the Adaptive Trigger feature is The Enforcer. It’s essentially a double barrel shotgun, from which you can either fire shot by shot, or unload two shots successively. It depends on how far you press down the trigger.

DualSense is Hands-Down the BEST Peripheral

The question of “why not use a keyboard over the DualSense” may come into mind. While we’re praising the Adaptive Trigger functionality for providing additional pseudo-buttons, why not just resort to a keyboard that has 104 functional keys? The answer lies within Haptic Feedback.

The delicate and detailed vibration system embedded within the ergonomic gaming controller provides a heightened sense of immersion to players. It is definitely an experience that you cannot replicate on the commercial Logitech gaming controller let alone a keyboard.

The importance of “immersion” may be trivial to some, if not most gamers. However, the DualSense achieves this aspect so well with the innovative Haptic Feedback that it is definitely worth mentioning. Anyone who found the HD Rumble of the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons impressive would simply be blown away with Haptic Feedback.

Rift Apart and How it Exploits the PS5’s SSD

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart makes full use of the PS5’s exclusive and patented SSD. In trailers, Ratchet travels between vastly different locations, within a fraction of a second, indicating that the modern storage of the PS5 is loading up gigabytes of information at high speeds. This isn’t just for show, as you will be switching through rifts in gameplay quite often. Assets, terrains, and even enemy types will swap out in a split second, providing a seamless gameplay experience.

Additionally there are actually no loading screens. None whatsoever. For comparison, the PS4 Ratchet and Clank title sends the player through a brief, but noticeable loading screen upon being KO’d. In this game, respawns are instant and a loading screen simply does not exist. This can only be experienced on PS5, is because the SSD itself is exclusive to the PlayStation 5. It’s also the main reason you can’t install Native PS5 games on an external drive, even if they are SSDs.

There’s even a part where Rivet can switch between two dimensions by hitting a rift fragment. Within a split second, the environment around you changes, assets such as obstacles have been switched around, entire structures have disappeared or popped up out of nowhere, and even new gameplay mechanics are accessible at the push of a button. And all of this is only possible, through the PS5’s unique SSD.

But with all this talk about how amazing the PS5 is let’s not forget that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is an AMAZING game itself.
