Don’t panic – there’s a solution!

If you’re from Malaysia and have tried to access the Steam store, instead of the homepage, you’ll see a notice. A controversial game has gotten Steam banned in Malaysia. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has decided to block the entire Steam Store. This is due to the discovery of a fighting game that pitch gods and deities against each other. The game in question is an Early Access platform fighting game called Fight of Gods. A recent addition of Jesus and Buddha has caused the game to be noticed by MCMC. Plus, fan requests for Prophet Muhammad’s addition to the line up triggered them.

The ministry then gave Steam and ultimatum; geo-block Fight of Gods in Malaysia within 24 hours or further action will be taken. Steam did not comply hence we received the hammer. If you’re interested in what the government has to say, you can read their press release here.
Update: Valve has taken the step to block Fights of Gods in Malaysia and the ban on the store has been lifted. Is your store still blocked? Try using Google public DNS.

Was this necessary?

Claiming that their intention is to protect us, I personally think this move was unnecessary. First of all, Fight of Gods existence wasn’t even well known in the country. So by putting them on blast like this, all the government did was promote the game. The government’s intention is to prevent negative scenario from happening. In this case, however, they sort of started it. Last week, we talked about Malaysia’s achievements in the gaming industry. An incident like this is a step backward in progression. Back in 2013, they tried to ban Grand Theft Auto V. When will the authority recognize that banning content doesn’t help prevent undesirable situation? What we need is to be exposed and to understand, the ability to comprehend and differentiate between virtual reality and reality, which, I’m sure the general public is capable of.
