With how successful Fortnite has been in such a short span of time following PUBG’s success, it’s no secret that the trendings games have but one formula — a Battle Royale mode. At the time, Fortnite shot past PUBG in popularity after releasing their Battle Royale mode despite originally being a Player-verses-environment game. But because Fortnite is free, it climbed to popularity much faster.

Jumping On The Battle Royale Hype

In a recent Q1 earnings call with EA’s executives, the topic of Battle Royale in the new Battlefield 5 came up. When asked about Battlefield 5 potentially having a free Battle Royale mode similar to the one in Fortnite. And they stated:

“We’re interested in experimenting with a free-to-play standalone game that might be in a shooter genre or another genre,” he said, “but I don’t think that’s how we’re looking at the Battlefield stuff right now.”

So the answer is no, Battlefield 5 is not going to have a battle royale mode. But they’re not opposed to making a standalone battle royale game and it’s not necessarily going to be a shooter. First of all, this is good news because a large portion of battle royale games are shooters (yes, there are other battle royale games other than Fortnite and PUBG). And second of all, why wouldn’t they make a battle royale game? It’s what the market wants.

Cross Platform

On top of that, they’re going to be looking into integrating some cross-platform playability. Something like what Epic Games has done with Fortnite, allowing mobile, pc and console players to meet on the battlefield.

“We’re looking at key franchises in terms of how we can deliver cross-platform play in a similar way that Fortnite has, especially some of our titles that have a broad and diverse player base,”

Cross platforming is certainly a big request from many players. Opening up crossplatforming in Battlefield would open up so many more opportunities for players who don’t share the same platform as their friends. And as they said:

“The ability to bring PC to mobile or mobile to console can bring family and friends together, and we think that’s an important part of our future development profile. Expect more from us on that front in the future.”

Let hope we hear more good news from EA soon.
