Team High Ground Wins Big At Malaysia Cyber Games 2018

History has been made in Malaysia as Team High Ground are crowned victors in the Dota 2 tournament at the Malaysia Cyber Games 2018.
The team, led by team captain Choo Jian ‘MoZuN’ Goh, defeated Team 5ive in a best-of-five series. They dominated their opponents in the first two games but as they were about to go for the victory, Team 5ive managed to catch them off guard to win the third game. Nonetheless, the team regathered themselves to take the final win.
Now, Team High Ground walks away with a total of RM20,000 (5000 USD). It’s crazy to think that the talents that these players displayed were nurtured in cyber cafes and their bedrooms.
Unlike the conventional eSports teams, these teammates don’t share a gaming house. Goh himself is from Kulai, approximately 3 hours away from Kuala Lumpur, where the competition was held. Still, the team has already won several competitions including MSI x SNS Grand League. Definitely, a team to look out for during the development of eSports in Malaysia.

Esports in Malaysia

We all know the video game industry has been developing at an insane rate. However, a vast majority of Malaysia still disagree with treating it as a profession. But that’s all about to change.
Prime Minister, Najib Razak himself attended the Malaysia Cyber Games 2018 and according to the Malay Mail Online this is what he said: “We need to embrace the change in the digital economy and the fourth revolution. This is the new lifestyle of young people.  The government must be youth-oriented based on future needs and undergo change.”

Things are definitely looking up for the Malaysian gamers. Furthermore, the competition had over 2,000 attendees and even more viewers online.
The Malaysia Cyber Games currently has the biggest rewards of all eSports competitions in Malaysia, with a prize pool of RM300,000 (76,000 USD). This was distributed amongst 8 other video games. Can’t wait to see what Malaysia’s government will do for eSports in 2018!
